OWUSS :: Scholarships

OWUSS :: Scholarships

Currently there are three Rolex Scholarships: North America, Europe, and Australasia. Each Rolex Scholarship provides a hands-on introduction to underwater and other aquatic-related endeavors for a young person considering a career in an underwater-related discipline. One scholar is selected from each of the three regions and each scholar spends approximately one year working side by side with current leaders in underwater fields. Each scholar travels primarily within his or her region, but may have opportunities throughout the underwater world. The range of experiences may include active participation in field studies, underwater research, scientific expeditions, laboratory assignments, equipment testing and design, photographic instruction, and other specialized assignments.

DEMA

Recntly I read this article...

I am surprised and disappointed, to say the least...  I would like to add my 2 cents for not attending DEMA.

As an Independent instructor, I am an afront to the industry.  There is no support?  There are not folks who look and ask myself and others their opinion about diving.  Instead we are the work horses that make shops successful.

There are no appreciations or fond memories - there is just "them" trying to ruin the business.  Well I am here to say that was done long ago.  Why is it the cert. organizations are promoting online and cutting out the shop - not to mention the individual?  Why would I not want help in growing my business?  Retaining my customers?

Why would I bring folks to your shop?  What do you do for me?  How do you help me?  Pro deals are not what they used to be!  Equipment rentals are not as low as can be - this is a fact.  Forget that I am bringing folks in and selling gear and promoting my favorite places... let's just get what we can out of him, due to the fact that he is stealing my customers.  That could have been mine, is all we hear.

Well folks I am here to say that I don't buy it.  Greed is what is killing us and socialism is taking away the rest.  It is small businesses who are carrying on and not just "brick & mortar" who are taking the risks.  I am tired of fighting.  So I am going to win.

I am going after folks.  I am going to go into your store and not bring folks. I will use the deli & the coffee shops.  I will order online and force you out!  Once I level the playing field the prices will fall and the interest will rise.

I now know what I must do.  I can't wait for you to quit and I can't wait for your customer who will find me - just for the friendly service and good care I show them.  The bigger you are, please remember - you were built on my back and I will bring you down.

Take care and let's go diving!  Have fun at DEMA... I will be out with your customers!
